Meet Team SG!

The Singapore Match Poker Team grew from an amalgamation of poker enthusiasts and professionals who lived and breathed the game. From humble beginnings in 2013, when the squad took home a bronze medal at the inaugural Asian Nations Cup in China, Team SG has changed and evolved with the addition of new players, strategies and leadership. Poker athletes Lau and Chua aced the Pairs Challenge in Bangkok in 2018, burnishing the name of Singapore poker in an international setting.

The team has performed consistently well throughout the years. Although the team - newly captained by Manila Megastack Main Event winner Lisa Tan - missed out on a podium finish to Australia in 2019, they gave an impressive performance in 2022 at the World Championships at Macedonia, coming in at 4th place.

After successfully qualifying at the Hong Kong Nations Cup, Team SG will be proudly representing Singapore in the coming 2023 World Championships at Switzerland!

FAQs

  • Match poker is a variation of poker created by the International Federation of Match Poker for tournament use. Unlike regular poker, match poker emphasizes the importance of skill over luck. Players are measured against other players who have gotten the same hands, and they are scored according to how skillfully they play a given hand.

  • Nope. According to dictionary.com, gambling is defined as “the activity or practice of playing at a game of chance for money or other stakes.” Match poker removes the element of luck from its scoring - it is a 100% skill-based sport.

  • Generally speaking, our team will attend 1-2 events per year as a group - the Asian Nations Cup and the World Championships.
